Riviera Nayarit Fishing

Riviera Nayarit Fishing

Riviera Nayarit, which runs for 200 miles along Mexico’s Pacific coastline, is one the most preferred fishing vacation spots in Mexico, if not the world, as well. In addition to fishing, you can find charming beachfront villages and learn about the area’s rich colonial history.

But most of all, it’s known for its fishing. If you love to fish and want to escape cold weather, here are four of the most popular Riviera Nayarit fishing spots.

Punta Mita

One of the most ideal places to begin your fishing trip is Punta Mita as it’s closer to the best fishing sites than other towns are. As a result, so you’ll enjoy more time fishing, instead of wasting time traveling to fishing areas. Punta Mita is mostly known for catching tuna. In fact, Punta Mita is the home of the well-known cow tuna, so-named because this huge fish can weigh as much as 380 pounds.

Also called Mita or Punta de Mita, this delightful fishing village lies only half an hour northwest of the town or Puerto Vallrat. It’s also known for surfing and wildlife.

Punta Mita is the world’s third largest bay, complete with long, sandy beaches. Besides tuna, you can catch a variety of other fish, including roosterfish, amberjack, small pargo and other types. The sun shines about 322 days a year and has an average temperature of 85 degrees F, making it a desirable vacation getaway in the fall and winter.

Nuevo Vallarta

If you want to catch marlin, then plan a fishing vacation to Nuevo Vallarta, which is located about 15 minutes from downtown Puerto Vallarta. Here you’ll find some of Mexico’s top vacations for marlin fishing

This area is also known worldwide for catching marlin. You can go on fishing charter boats, found along the 10-mile beachfront.  In addition to marlin that weigh as much as 1200 pounds, Nuevo Vallarta is also well-known for catching tuna as large as 300 pounds.

Sayulita

Probably the most desirable coastal beach village is Sayulita. This is an ideal spot for people who want to get away from the bigger towns and enjoy a bohemian lifestyle as it’s common to see people shopping barefoot in the streets.

This fishing village also attracts surfers because its waters have large waves. If you don’t know how to surf, sign up for surf lessons. There are also classes in paddle boarding.

Panga fishing is especially popular in Sayulita.  Here you can enjoy charter fishing in open-bow boats. While fishing, you can enjoy seeing some jungles, beaches and remote villages. You can also fish from the rocks or from the beach. Morning and late evening hours are the best times to fish because this is when the waves are smaller.

Bucerias

This charming, tranquil Mexican town is not only a lovely fishing village, but it’s also a good place to go deep sea fishing. If you’re looking for a quiet place to fish, then visit Bucerias.

Although this town hasn’t grown as quickly as other areas, it features everything you need for a relaxing vacation. Bucerias is known for deep sea fishing, as well as open-water fishing. Some of the fish that you can catch include sailfish, wahoo, Mahi Mahi, tuna and others.

Considerations and Warnings

Although it’s in the tropics, Riviera Nayarit can experience some winter weather, although it’s not harsh. Thus, always check the weather forecast before venturing out on a fishing expedition.

Because different fish are more abundant during different seasons, it helps to plan your vacation around the kind of fish you plan to catch. For example, the fish you’re most likely to catch from October through December include sailfish, mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, black marlin, and striped marlin.
