Get Started Boogie Boarding!

In the summer of 1971, on the North of shore of Hawaii’s Oahu island, a man by the name of Tom Morrey invented what we know today as the boogie board. Tom’s attempt to make a faster surfboard led him to a small, lightweight board with a flat nose and wide platform. He headed out to the local surf break to give it a test, and an instant classic was born. Whether you’re a first time rider wanting to catch some gentle surf back to shore, or an adventure seeker longing for that larger swell, this free and fun activity is sure to be a hit. Here’s how to get started with boogie boarding:

Grab the board, and head to the beach
The beach in front of our villas provide for the the perfect boogie boarding playground. A gentle slope and sandy bottom creates a variety of wave sizes fit for all skill levels. Small waist high waves closer to shore are great for beginners and kids. If you head further out you’ll find larger waves perfect for those looking to up their skills. At the north end of the beach, a right handed surf break with steady shoulders gives plenty of opportunity for more advanced riders.

Timing, Speed, and Body Placement
3 simple things are all you need. Much like surfing, your board needs to be continuously falling down the face of a wave for that long ride in. Before you start, you’ll need to gain some forward momentum. For small waves close to shore, a simple jump forward onto the board, or push from parent will usually be all that it takes. If you’re out a little deeper, wait for your perfect wave to be a body-length away, and start kicking as hard as you can. Make sure your shoulders are over the front third of the board, grab the nose with both hands, keep your legs from dragging too low in the water, and off you’ll go!

Advanced Technique
Once you master the art of catching the wave, a variety of more advanced techniques are sure to keep you coming back. Learn to turn, spin, jump, or master the Dropknee or Jack Stance.
